Presidential Citizens Medal Recipient Eli J. Segal

Eli J. Segal served as Assistant to the President of the United States from January 1993 - February 1996. In this capacity, he was responsible for the legislation that created AmeriCorps, President Clintons national service initiative. In October 1993, Mr. Segal was confirmed by the United States Senate to the additional position of the first Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National Service.
In January 1997, Mr. Segal launched The Welfare to Work Partnership, a nonpartisan organization of the American business community committed to hiring and retaining former welfare recipients. He served as the Partnerships President and CEO until December 2000, and now is its Chairman.
In recognition of his work for AmeriCorps and the Welfare to Work Partnership, President Clinton presented Mr. Segal with the Presidential Citizens Medal, at a White House Ceremony in January 2001. In May 2002, he received the Speaker Thomas P. ONeill Jr. Award for Exemplary Public Service.
Mr. Segal currently serves on the Board of Directors of Hasbro Inc. (NYSE), hotels.com (NASDAQ), A.C.Moore (NASDAQ), Citizens Financial Group and Stonebridge International, and is Chairman of the Board of SchoolSports, a magazine covering high school sports. He also serves on the Boards of several nonprofit organizations, including The John F. Kennedy Library and Foundation, City Year, The Heller School of Brandeis University and The National Alliance to End Homelessness.
He is the co-author of Common Interest, Common Good: Creating Value through Business and Social Sector Partnerships (Harvard Business School Press, 2000).
Prior to his public service, Mr. Segal was the Chief Executive Officer of several companies. He ran Vogart Crafts Corporation, a manufacturer of yarn and crafts products, from 1974 until he resigned in 1981 to acquire American Publishing Corporation, a manufacturer of games and puzzles. In 1984, he launched Bits and Pieces, a mail order company and in 1990, he acquired GAMES Magazine which he published until taking a leave of absence to serve as the Chief of Staff of the Clinton- Gore campaign in 1992.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Segal received his Bachelors degree from Brandeis University in 1964 and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School in 1967. He is married to Phyllis N. Segal and has two children, Jonathan (married to Pamela Lehmberg) and Mora (married to Jeffrey Lemberg), and two grandchildren, Jackson and Lily.

As founder of AmeriCorps and the first Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, Eli Segal has galvanized the American spirit of community and helped us realize the dream of a vital civilian service corps. As President and Chief Executive Officer of the Welfare-to-Work Partnership, he has brought businesses and communities together to create opportunity for welfare recipients, enabling them to experience the power, dignity, and independence of work.
